I've got a Samsung color laser printer. I've had it about 10 years, maybe a bit longer. I'm not sure I would recommend Samsung either. It's on its last legs, and I really haven't printed much with it.

I have a Brother b/w laser that I am quite happy with: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0764NWFP8

$130 isn’t a great price though, I paid $106 for mine, and $100 for another I got for my parents. If you don’t need it urgently, you might set up a camelcamelcamel alert for a better price.

Regardless I definitely recommend not getting an inkjet. Lasers are so much nicer in my experience, unless you are printing a lot of photos (and even if you are printing photos you’ll get much nicer quality if you go somewhere like staples or a drug store that has a commercial photo printer, or use an online service for the same.

If you can live with black and white, get a laser printer. The cheapest Brother machines are perfectly functional. Samsung’s printer division was bought by HP, so how long they will stick around remains to be seen.

Inkjet wise it’s a bit of a mixed bag. If you are a regular user the Epson range is decent. The eco tank models might be of interest as a decent quantity of ink is included. Refilling it again is very cheap. Brother and Canon have brought similar models to market but as I’m not in that business any more I can’t say how good they are. Brother ink jets are mostly junk in general though. Canon and HP share print engines, but the Canon  printers typically have better software.

HP can go fuck itself. I've heard good thinkg about Brother lately. I'll probably buy one once I'm fed up with my current officejet.

In 15 years of residential IT/tech support, HP printer are the ones that have problems. Not so much their enterprise-specific models, but for sure their consumer lines. I’ve stuck with Brother multi function machines and they have been reliable and intuitive.

Most recently, I bought an inkjet from them that does 11X17" scanning and double-sided printing. It uses their ink tank system and I haven’t had to replace them in the year I’ve owned it.

Get a Brother printer. They have better toner prices and consumption rates, the driver software package doesn’t try to install gigs of adware, and they work with virtually every operating system out there either with the provided drivers or through plain PostScript.

They certainly don’t make it like they used to.

I bought an old “broken” LaserJet 6P from university surplus back then and fixed it with just a screwdriver and a shake in the toner. It was a jammed reset button. Gave it to a friend and I think it’s still functional.

We replaced our dead  HP and Canon printers with an Epson Ecotank printer. We like it, and it works well and was easy to set up. I really disliked the Canon printer. The HP printer was ok, but buying ink was absurd.

Seconding everyone here, buy a B&W laser printer unless frequent color prints are necessary. I’ve used the cheapest brother laser printer in my home and two past offices with zero issue, and went through Office Depots’ amazingly robust business client programs for the rare times I needed more capability.

I deal with two of these on a daily basis (actually the older model) and haven’t had a problem. No ink  to dry out and nowhere near the problems of the HP and Epson they replaced.

I have had so many shitty printers/multifunction scanner things from HP and such and now I only buy Brother printers. We have 3 across my family members, all work flawlessly and they’re simple and the ink is cheap.

I’ll jump on the Brother bandwagon here. Currently using a multifunction laser from them and have an HP inkjet for occasional photo printing. The HP even expires the ink, while the Brother has done 4 years duty on two toner cartridges.
